The 6.8-magnitude quake struck at 9:05 a.m. local time (05:05 GMT) in Tingri County, a rural area in China known as the northern gateway to Everest. The epicenter was 10 kilometers (6 miles) deep, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain and a popular destination for climbers and trekkers, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.
